Week two of summer reading is in the books! This week, we explored fiber arts! I’m now having the opposite problem of my older story times being overcrowded! I think with kids out of school and adding in the three-year-olds, I’ve created an interesting conundrum for myself this summer, but I do think the crowds will die down a bit once school starts back. Hopefully we can make it through a few weeks of a packed room and come out the other side with minimal trauma. =)
Book Babies (0-2) Story Time
Theme: Fiber/Wearable Art (aka clothes for the babies)
Books: All Sorts of Clothes by Hannah Reidy, Blue Hat, Green Hat by Sandra Boynton
Songs/Rhymes (lyrics provided when links not available):
A Sailor
A sailor went to sea, sea, sea
To see what he could see, see, see
But all that he could see, see, see
Was the bottom of the deep blue sea, sea, sea.
Clap on each “sea” and “see”
Repeat with other motions
We All Wear Clothes (Tune: Farmer in the Dell)
A hat goes on my head
A hat goes on my head
Clothes, clothes, we all wear clothes.
A hat goes on my head.
Socks…feet
Pants…legs
Shirt…tummy
Silly Hat Song (Tune: This Old Man) (with scarves)
On my head, I wear my hat.
It is such a silly hat
That my head will wiggle waggle to and fro
Where else can my silly hat go?
Repeat using different parts of the body
Popcorn Kernels (with scarves)
Big Books
Big books, (hands wide)
Little books, (hands close)
Short books, (Hands horizontal close)
Tall! (Hands horizontal far apart)
Old books, (hands stroke chin like a long beard)
New books, (rocking motion as if holding a baby)
I love them all! (arms across chest)
Songs for Scarf Play (on Spotify): Scarves Up and Down and Around by Johnette Downing & Slow and Fast by Hap Palmer
Clean Up Song (for after play time)
Closing Rhyme
Tickle the clouds.
Tickle your toes.
Turn around,
And tickle your nose.
Reach down low,
And reach up high.
Storytime’s over –
Wave goodbye!
Manipulatives used: scarves
Play time: soft sensory pool (kiddie pool filled with flannel scraps, scarves, and stuffies) & clothesline matching (PVC pipe “clothesline” with socks and gloves to pin and match)

Because our Little Learners Story Time is incorporating more play and less crafts due to space this summer, I’ve also started wrapping it up with our cleanup song and closing rhyme from the Book Babies sessions as well.
