Weekly Nibble: July 24, 2020

This image is the highlight and the heartbreak of this week. It was the first time I had seen my book club kids since early March. It was wonderful to bring them summer reading prizes, talk to them about books and everything they’ve been doing since we saw each other last, and see their excitement. It was simultaneously deeply despairing to see the confusion on their faces when confronted with me in a mask, to only be able to offer them “air hugs,” and to not know when I might see them again. This picture represents a lot of what I’ve been feeling lately: sadness and frustration permeated with small glimpses of hope.

I am standing at the front of a classroom of children holding my arms out in front of me in a hugging motion. The kids are seated, socially distanced, at two tables in front of me with their arms extended in a similar fashion. I am wearing a blue mask over my nose and mouth.
