Weekly Nibble: March 13, 2020

Whew! This feels like the longest week I’ve experienced in a while. In combination with the full moon, Friday the 13th, and spreading fears about coronavirus, it’s been insanely busy. On Monday, I had my first outreach visit to a new (to us) afterschool program doing Rhino in the House with over 50 kids. On Tuesday, we hosted our second annual Tech Take-Apart Workshop. On Wednesday, I tested my upcoming St. Patrick’s Day escape room with some of our helpful staff members! Today was spent frantically shooting our upcoming LibCon promo video with Ghostbusters, a T-Rex, and multiple Time Lords. Plus, all week long we’ve been viewing demos of different online summer reading programs, trying to decide what we want to go with since our original plan for this summer fell through at the last minute and we are down to the wire.

While there is a lot going on, I did want to share three important updates, one professional and two (mostly) personal, that are very exciting!

  1. HB 2721 was shut down in the House on Wednesday. The way it was handled was kind of hilarious, but also gives me confidence that there are more representatives on our side in Tennessee than I may have originally thought. And while this particular bill has been shut down, I feel it is extremely important that librarians everywhere keep an eye out for similar legislation in the future.
  2. I finished my grad school application this week! I finally got everything turned in a few days before the deadline (nothing like a little procrastination to get your butt in gear). I’m anxious and excited as I wait to hear if I’ve been accepted or not.
  3. I was asked to write an article on Librarian-in-Training for the “Youth Matters” column of American Libraries magazine! For the first time ever in my life, I will be getting paid to write, which has long been a dream of mine. I am super stoked and will keep you all updated here on when that article will appear.

I do feel like this blog has sort of inadvertently slid onto the back burner because of grad school application work recently, and now my draft article is due by the end of this month, so I will be working furiously on that as well. But I will try my very best to keep up the posts here. They may continue to be somewhat late though. =)
